Creativity and Money made useful

Today Naomi was in a creative mood again and so we decided to transform her embroidery picture into a pillow. It was really quite simple and the best part for Naomi was being able to stuff it at the end. She then, promptly made good use of the pillow by lying down on the couch and falling fast asleep.

On another note, Anna had a tooth pulled out yesterday by the dentist as it was in the way of her new teeth coming in. She did a great job being brave while getting the freezing in and sat nice and still while the stubborn tooth got pulled out. The tooth was huge that came out and so Colin decided that the tooth fairy gives extra money for such big teeth. Only two days previously, both her and Naomi lost other baby teeth, so the tooth fairy's been extra busy at our house. Which leads me to the reason for this story. Recently in the National Post I read an article which was describing ways for children to learn fiscal responsibility. The author made mention of a product called a Moonjar Moneybox. The following day I looked it up on the web and was very impressed with this product. It encourages children to put their money in one of three boxes: save, spend or share. Colin, being the accountant that he is, thought this would be a great way to teach our children, in a fun way, about money. This will help us in encouraging the children to put money in the 'share' box for causes such as church, missions, or even sponsoring a child. Now their birthday money, tooth money and earned money can be saved in the appropriate box and not be floating around from purse to piggy bank. For those interested, their website is great and is in Canadian Funds. I can't wait till they come in the mail!

What a neat idea for kids! Too bad these weren't around way back when I was a kid ...
Anyway, good idea Colin and Laura, to share this kind of info with others.

Neat idea! We have a similar system; we save up for a while in their piggy banks, then a couple of times a year we sort it all: any birthday money is automatically theirs to spend, while any earned or found money is split three ways...10% to the church, then the remainder is split evenly between the bank and spending. Also a great way to teach them fiscal responsibility. Last year Vanessa saved up enough to buy herself a $100 digital camera!!
