Field Day 2011
Today was the annual school field day. It was fantastic weather for it - partly cloudy and only around 20 degrees. Both Anna and Naomi ran, jumped, skipped and hopped their best all day. Grades 1-6 are split up into different teams and they stay with their team for every event. Each student's individual result in their event contributes to the teams points. At the end of the day, the points are accumulated and every team gets placed. Out of ten teams this year, Anna's team came in eighth and Naomi's in seventh. This year the team names were based on breakfast cereals - Anna's team being the Froot Loops and Naomi's the Lucky Charms. Leading up to the field day, each team gets together and makes up their own poster for their team corner in the gym and also make up a team chant/song. It's a great team building exercise and gets the kids participating in a cross-grade activity. It's also nice to see the older kids (grade six) cheer and lead the younger kids in their different events. Here are the pics from the day!
The big event for Anna this year was running the 1.5k race. Only grades 4,5,6 are allowed to run and they do it together; first the girls and then the boys. Anna ran the whole thing and was happy with herself for finishing :)
Getting ready to start...

Naomi getting ready for the hockey shoot out - Silas's favourite event to watch.
Naomi running the 100m dash.
Almost at the finish line!
Anna at the soccer shoot out. She did well at this event. (They have to kick it in a net the size of a hockey net.)

Naomi at the softball throw.
Smiley Naomi :)
Anna running the 200m dash/run?
At the end of the day, all the teams get together for a team game - the wagon wheel relay race. It's a lot of fun and it produces a lot of noise - a nice ending to the day.

There's nothing better than sports day to close out a good school year :)
It is so neat to see how Anna and Naomi put their whole heart into the events! Here is a little tidbit of information: as far as I know, I am the one who brought the wagon wheel relay game to Canada from Australia (1989). I learned it there and when I was teaching at Covenant Christian school in Millgrove I introduced it to the school. It went over so well that it spread around to other schools through other teachers, etc. and it continues to be a lot of fun for the kids.
