Day One

So, it seems I can't access WordPress with Wi-Fi at this KOA Kampground, so I'll update you all here. We arrived at this KOA, just outside Chicago, at around 5:30pm (Central Standard Time). It was a long day but the kids were amazing. Our drive went very well; 20 min. stop at the border in Sarnia with no trouble from the border guards, small stops for gas, snacks and lunch, and some small traffic slowdowns in Chicago. We did manage to give ourselves some excitement for the day, though. Finding a gas station in Chic ago can be a little difficult. We knew we could make it through the main part of the city but would be looking for the first service centre on the way out. I couldn't see one on the map but figured there would be a sign indicating gas at an exit instead. We ended up pulling off the highway and searching for some time, without panicking, and finally found one in a high end suburb of Chicago. All's well that end's well :) I will try to update WordPress tomorrow night with some pictures. Now, I'm off to sleep in the captain's sleeping quarters. It's another long day tomorrow!
Oh, and for those wondering, our trailer is around 6,500 lbs. It seems odd that our van can pull it but you have to remember that an Airstream is designed differently than a traditional trailer. It's aerodynamic and it's equipped with a specially designed hitch, called a Hensley Hitch. It towed beautifully today - even with the ton of traffic in Chicago. We know we'll be slower on the roads (we average around 100km/hour) but we wouldn't want to go much faster if we were just driving our car. The mountains will really put our trailer and van to the test but we're up to the challenge :)
And, finally, something cute Silas said today, "Are we soon at BC, Mom?" This was asked shortly after we crossed the border in Sarnia. Poor boy has no idea how long this trip will be!

We had a couple of close calls with gas when we drove across two years ago! We were VERY worried a few times but always managed to find a station just in time. Weren't so lucky a few weeks ago on our way back from Smithers - ran out of gas a mere mile from the gas station :) Brother Pete D. was with us so he hopped on one of our kids bikes, filled a jerry can and hitched a ride back to us (bit awkward biking with a full jerry can!) An adventure that we aren't likely to forget too soon!

Last night I was thinking about some of our long trips in the past and the kids constantly asking, "are we there yet"? Then you post this one about Silas asking almost the same thing, like father like son :o) You'll be hearing that many more times I'm sure !!
